New & Traditional Styles of Chip Carving: From Classic to Positive Imaging
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (August, 1900)
Author: Wayne Barton
Average review score:

This is the one you've been waiting for!
After you've read and mastered any other chip carving technique, this one comes along as a surprise. Barton reviews other styples and applications of chip carving so that when he explains positive image motif, you get the full impact of what it does. Positive Image motif is a radical change from traditional chip carving but one that is certainly very pleasing. The carver would have to develop his drawing skills to do it, but the results are well worth it!For anyone who works with wood, this is a book that adds an entirely new dimension to any woodworking project.

Night train to Innsbruck : a commando's escape to freedom
Published in Unknown Binding by W. Kimber ()
Author: Rex Woods
Average review score:

A commando's escape from a train to a concentration camp.
This book is an excellent account of a true war story that took place in the second world war. I am fortunate enough to know the man spoken about in this book. He is none other than my Grandfather, Sherard Veasey, who now lives in a small town called Somerset West in South Africa. "Oupa" as we call him now has lived a very eventful life. This is the kind of stuff I dream about in adventure stories, yet I'm sure it's sometimes often too easy to romanticise adventure and forget the horror and carnage of war.

Should you wish to get in touch with this ex-commando, please let me know.

Happy reading.

Night Trains
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (July, 1980)
Authors: Barbara Wood and Gareth Wootton
Average review score:

Valiant Heroes in Deadly Times
I have loved every book I have read by Barbara Wood, which now includes Night Trains. Each book has been completely different in plot, although each one so far has some element of medicine involved.

Night Trains is based on actual events that occurred in Poland during WWII. In this fictionalized version, Polish doctors Jan Szukalski and Maria Duszynska perpetrate a grand-scale hoax to protect the Polish town of Sofia from the Nazis. Their resistance does not include any killing; rather, they inject all who complain of any illness with a vaccine that gives the appearance of a positive typhus reading. This leads to the Nazis' quarantine of the town and the surrounding region, which protects the citizens from further harassment, executions, and deportations to death camps.

Meanwhile, a group of Jewish and Polish resistance fighters are devising a plan to ambush a German train to retrieve the ammunitions it carries, and to rescue a train's human freight headed for death camps in order to obtain more fighters for their cause. These heroes put themselves in great danger, and despite their efforts, do not reap the success that the doctors do with their hoax.

The book is continually suspenseful, with public executions, descriptions of tortures, death camp atrocities, and Nazis always on the watch for suspicious behavior.

I searched the internet to find the historical basis for this book and discovered that a documentary is currently being filmed about it, called "A Private War"; the true hero's name is Dr. Lazowski. Night Trains has many details obviously similar to true events. For those interested, related web sites are:

A New Educational Tool
From an educator's perspective the Northwoods Field Guides are an excellent ancillary tool at all great levels. They are appropriate for introductory use as well as through adult level review and education. I have the wildflower and animal tracks guides and am looking forward to completing the set with other tags currently available. My only question now is, when are we going to find more topics?
